Partner Eric Chaffin on Glaxo’s Removal of Zinc from Denture Cream
On February 18, 2010, the Associated Press (AP) reported pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) will no longer manufacture, market or distribute Poligrip products containing zinc. The AP article attributes the company’s voluntary action to a number of reports of adverse health effects, as well as the mounting number of denture cream lawsuits being filed by Chaffin Luhana and other firms across the country. The products, which AP reports boasted more than $520 million in sales last year, have been linked to irreversible neurological side effects, including nerve damage and neuropathy, as well as hematological disorders, including anemia. Chaffin Luhana LLP has filed nearly 20 cases on behalf of clients who have been seriously injured by the zinc in Poligrip, as well it’s popular competitor, Procter & Gamble’s Fixodent.
Partner Eric Chaffin was quoted in the article, expressing the devastating effects denture creams containing zinc have had on Chaffin Luhana’s denture cream clients:
“Our typical Super Poligrip and Fixodent client uses a wheelchair, walker or cane for mobility and many of them have hands so spastic that they resemble claws.”
