On May 5, 2009 Eric Chaffin, now managing partner of Chaffin Luhana LLP, appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America (“GMA”), in a nationally televised segment, covering the first major filings of denture cream lawsuits, and the devastating effects the products have had on consumers, including Chaffin Luhana client Ellen Isaacs.

- an interview of partner Eric Chaffin, who is one of the lead attorneys in both the federal and state denture litigations;
- an interview of Dr. Sharon Nations, an Assistant Professor of Neurology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and lead author of “Denture Cream: An unusual source of excess zinc, leading to hypocupremia and neurologic disease” published in Neurology, 2008;
- an interview, neurological examination and blood test of client Ellen Isaacs, who uses a walker for mobility and has suffered, inter alia, zinc poisoning, copper deficiency and debilitating neurological injuries allegedly caused by her use of Super Poligrip denture cream; and
- an interview of Dr. Rachel Nardin, a neurologist with the Shapiro Clinic at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts.
GMA Segment Places Important Spotlight on Denture Cream Zinc Poisoning
Mr. Chaffin stated that “the Good Morning America denture segment covers what we believe is a common story among the denture cream users who suffer from zinc poisoning.” Poisoning symptoms for patients may start with tingling and numbness in the extremities, patients may have unexplainable blood disorders and/or may lose their sense of balance requiring them to use a cane, walker or wheelchair for mobility. As Mr. Chaffin explained, “Unfortunately, the manufacturers who sell denture creams containing zinc do not warn consumers about the potential for zinc poisoning and copper deficiency.” As a result, consumers who suffer from zinc poisoning from denture cream do not know that they are being poisoned and, “frequently they go months, if not years, without the doctors identifying the source of the zinc,” said Mr. Chaffin. “We believe that had the manufacturers given these consumers and the medical community proper warnings, the very significant injuries to these consumers could have been avoided. Through these lawsuits and the GMA segment, we hope that public awareness of the problem with zinc in denture cream will grow and that the companies will be forced to stop selling these denture creams and provide adequate warnings to consumers,” said Mr. Chaffin.
