News: Driver fatally hurt in crash while fleeing police near downtown Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, PA — A man died Sunday morning after a series of crashes in Pittsburgh’s Marshall-Shadeland neighborhood, according to WPXI.

Pittsburgh Police initially received a call about a car crash in the area of Eckert Street and Beaver Avenue shortly before 6:40 a.m.

Officers arrived to find a male driver unresponsive behind the wheel of a car, which had crashed against a wall. The man woke up and had begun talking to officers, who observed a large amount of narcotics on his lap. After being asked to exit the vehicle, the driver instead fled the scene, striking an unoccupied patrol car. While speeding southbound on Beaver Avenue, his car collided with a light standard on Island Avenue. It then hit another wall and caught fire.

First responders extinguished the fire and extricated the driver. He was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced deceased.

The Collision Investigation Unit is handling the case. No other information has been released at this time.
