News: Passenger dies after multi-vehicle wreck on I-80 in Mercer County

MERCER COUNTY, PA — An 80-year-old man from Gratz died Monday afternoon after a rollover crash involving multiple vehicles on Interstate 80 near Grove City, reports WTAE.

The collision occurred on the eastbound lanes of I-80, between the exits to I-79 and Grove City. Multiple paramedics and fire crews had responded to the scene by 3:30 p.m.

Pennsylvania State Police said a tractor-trailer, a Jeep, and a pickup truck hauling a trailer were involved.

A report from WKBN First News 27 indicates all the vehicles were traveling eastbound when the Jeep was rear-ended by the pickup truck, which cause the Jeep to strike the tractor-trailer ahead and overturn.

The victim, who was sitting in the front-passenger seat of the Jeep, was trapped following the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene. He has since been identified as John Lesher.

First responders had the driver of the Jeep flown to a hospital in Pittsburgh. The Jeep’s two backseat passengers were also taken to a hospital with unspecified injuries.

No other injuries were reported following the event.

Multiple agencies, including Pine Township Fire Department, Springfield Township Fire Department, and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, responded to the scene.

Authorities continue to investigate.
